the night my mother won.
Many people might say that my mother lost the Millington mayoral election last night, and technically she did. But, honestly, she’s won even more in losing…
Let me explain.
Years ago my mother became frustrated with the injustices that were happening in her small community right out side of Memphis. Rather than shake her head and move on with her life, she decided to take action. She created a group called the “Millington Concerned Citizens” group, which promoted civic awareness and engagement. She also began to attend all Board of Alderman meetings in order to learn more about the operations in her town. In doing so, she became a watchdog of sorts when she launched Living in Millington, a blog she uses to hold her local politicians accountable.
As mayor, she wouldn’t have had the freedom to continue Living in Millington as it currently stands. She would have had to shift the focus, and it would have lost some of its punch. I’m proud that my mother took a daring leap of faith when she put her name in the hat for the race. I’m even more proud that she’ll be able to continue as a political watchdog and concerned citizen that will fight for her community with even more commitment.
Mom, your family is immensely proud of you! Your desire to change your community for the better is infectious. You’ve inspired so many people to become more civically engaged in Millington, and this is only the beginning. Keep up the GREAT work and continue to let God use you for His purposes! May His perfect will be done in everything. We love you!
