Week Six: My Miracles

Each baby knit delicately together in our wombs is a miracle. It’s amazing to really think about the process of creation. A tiny, almost microscopic embryo becomes a unique person with tons of personality as they grow up!

2 ½ – 3 Months after I had my daughter, Phebe, by c-section, we became pregnant with our son. Both we and the doctors were amazed because they thought it would take at least 6 months to get pregnant again. I was also told that I would have to have surgery at that 6 month mark to remove a large fibroid I had that had been monitored while I was pregnant with Phebe. However, during the last few weeks of my pregnancy with my daughter, the fibroid had shrunk and when I had my first ultrasound with my son, David, the fibroid was gone!

That was the first miracle I experienced with my son.

The second happened on the day I delivered him by c-section. We were in the operating room and after the doctor made the first outer incision continuing to my uterus to make another, she exclaimed, “this is a miracle!” All eyes went over the curtain to view the “miracle” while my husband and I waited for an explanation.

Following a safe delivery with the cries of my son echoing in the room, the doctor explained, “when I went to cut your uterus, I discovered that your uterus was already open! There was a huge uterine window and I could see your son simply hanging out in your abdominal cavity with no support except that of your amniotic sac – a thin, but relatively strong membrane. There was no blood, which leads me to believe that David had developed and grown within your womb with your uterus being open, perhaps for months. It’s a miracle you didn’t go into active labor as both you and David may have been lost in a matter of minutes. This is truly a miracle!”

I closed my eyes, thanking God for saving us and He showed me a vision of Him being the one that held David securely in my womb throughout my pregnancy. Weekly ultrasounds and stress tests didn’t reveal the danger my son and I were in, but God knew He would deliver what He promised!

Reflection:

  1. There are unknown dangers that lurk around us, but God is always protecting us. We can truly rest in His shadow (Psalm 91) if we remain close to Him. Can you think of a time when God rescued you from a danger that remained unknown until the day of rescue? What did He do?
  2. I believe God gives us these experiences to remind us that He’s as near to us as the mention of His name. Can you rest in His shadow today?

Scriptures for Meditation and Memorization:

Psalm 139: 13-14

You made all the delicate, inner parts of my body
and knit me together in my mother’s womb.
14 Thank you for making me so wonderfully complex!
Your workmanship is marvelous—how well I know it.

Philippians 1:6 NIV

“Being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.”

Psalm 118: 13-14 NLT

My enemies did their best to kill me,
    but the Lord rescued me.
14 The Lord is my strength and my song;
    he has given me victory.
