Week Four: Daughter

For the longest time, I couldn’t fully understand what it meant to be a child of God. I would sing the songs and read the scriptures, but I didn’t feel like I were truly his. I felt orphaned. So when things would go awry, I would retreat into my loneliness hoping the darkness of depression would somehow bring me comfort. It never did.

The lightbulb went off one evening when a mentor of mine challenged me to read Psalm 139 everyday. She told me I needed to soak in God’s love and admiration for me deeply and then I would begin to truly understand my role as his daughter. The first night I read through the chapter, verses 11 and 12 hit me like a ton of bricks. It says,

“I could ask the darkness to hide me

and the light around me to become night—

but even in darkness I cannot hide from you.

To you the night shines as bright as day.

Darkness and light are the same to you.”

The sentence that kept replaying in my mind was, “but even in darkness I cannot hide from you.” When I retreated to my mental dungeon, God was there! I was never truly alone! I wept when I read that sentence because it showed me that he cares about the dark times and he doesn’t depart my side when I’m in the midst of dark nights. I can’t hide from him. I can only hide in him.

He’s a good father that comforts. He loves deeply, and he calls me his own. Go to him and let his love wrap you tightly. He’s always near.

Reflection:

  1. Do you believe that you are a daughter of God? If not, take a moment and ask God what’s blocking you from believing that you are his. What is he saying to you?
  2. What are some emotions that you find yourself hiding from? Can you name each one, then give it to God?

Scriptures for Meditation and Memorization:

Psalm 139: 11-12 NLT

I could ask the darkness to hide me
and the light around me to become night—
12     but even in darkness I cannot hide from you.
To you the night shines as bright as day.
Darkness and light are the same to you.

Deuteronomy 31: 8 NLT

Do not be afraid or discouraged, for the Lord will personally go ahead of you. He will be with you; he will neither fail you nor abandon you.

Psalm 139: 5

You go before me and follow me.
You place your hand of blessing on my head.
